Top 5 Cocktails at 24

At 24 I have experimented with a lot of different cocktails. Different alcohols, bitters, and liqueurs, and have come up with my favorites. I still have a lot left to learn about mixology and crafting. Three of my drinks are timeless classics, they’re just good.

5. Blueberry Mojito

This is one of the greatest summer cocktails. Rum being the base just brings you right to the tropics. Mojitos are a wonderful fresh drink add some fresh wild blueberries and your mouth is in heaven. Mint, blueberry, and lime, nuff said.

WordPress thinks mojito is spelled wrong. Get with it guys.

4. Manhattan

Bourbon. Living in Louisville, Kentucky we are near a lot of distilleries and good bourbon.  I believe this is the best bourbon cocktail out there. Smooth and elegant while still letting the caramel bourbon notes shine through. Originating at the Manhattan club in New York City in 1870, this drink is a classic.

3. Tom Collins

So simple, reminds me of an adult sprite but way better. If you have not had a Tom Collins order one or make one. Now.
A beautiful harmony between gin, simple syrup, fresh lemon, soda, and a cherry garnish. The drink gets better as you move towards the maraschino cherry at the bottom.

2. Dirty Martini (extra dirty)

The only savory cocktail of the bunch. Sometimes you are just not in the mood for a sweet cocktail. This is my go to. Salty, dry, and piney. Must love gin. Must love green olives. The pinnacle of a classic savory.

1. Pimm’s Cup

My version of the Pimm’s Cup (the Pimp’s Cup).
Bursts of lemon, slightly sweet, with a spiced gin tail. There is nothing else like it. Everyone I have made this drink for has loved it. This is my go to on a day to day especially during summer. It is a beautifully fresh and strong. A great drink for a hot summer day. Grab the recipe here!

Why Millennials Are Awesome.

I can’t tell you how many ‘millennial’ related articles that I’ve read. Most generations are repulsed by millennials, we’re lazy, self entitled, and we spend all day on Facebook and Snapchat. While the later is true we are anything but lazy; maybe a little self entitled. I like the millennial generation for many reasons but I am partial.

Here is why I think Millennials are great…

Millennials can do work WAY faster than any other generation. We aren’t lazy we;re just efficient. Businesses succeed and grow by being as efficient as possible, #TBT to Ford and the assembly line. Everything I do at my job is done quickly, correctly, and beautiful. Millennials care how things look, we aren’t going to use powerpoint and have something look straight out of the 80’s, unless it’s fashion, that shit’s coming back. We also want to be told we did a great job, if we did a great job. We were spoiled but really we just want to be appreciated. Who doesn’t?

Creativity
We have a lot of great minds and great ideas as a generation. This is usually suppressed by the corporate environment. Millennials need to be let loose and able to offer up their ideas. Let us work from home or at a coffee shop once and awhile, a little freedom goes a longgg way. We also really take advantage and appreciate our days off. We work to live not live to work.

Do you know how many blogs are out there? I don’t either but it’s a butt ton. We want to experience, share, explore, and write. We love to write and read blogs because it’s personal.

Free Free Free!
We want everything free and we will do anything to get it free. With our parents going through an economic crisis most of your families went from being wealthy to being poor in a short span of time. We know what both sides look like. We make use of and know how to obtain free tools for work such as canva, wordpress, prezi, not to mention social media. This saves businesses a LOT of money.

Bitch Better Have My Money.
PAY. We want to be compensated well for our work. NO we don’t want to work for free…. and we are not sorry about that. We are well-educated/hard workers we deserve to be paid well.

After writing this.. I know I should get paid more.

The Down Side
The not so awesome side of the millennial generation is we don’t reach out or look up. We spend most of our time looking down at our phone seeing what is happening on Twitter. While we do live in a partially virtual world, we are able to put out phones down and be social. Cheers!

Millennial Seduction (what describes us more than salted caramel?)
Sweet, salty, & smooth.

Caramel Sauce (this will make extra, store in fridge for up to 2 weeks)

Ingredients:
1 cup Sugar
1/4 cup Water
1/2 cup Heavy Cream
1 TBS Bourbon
Pinch of Salt

Directions:
1. Simmer sugar and water on medium heat, swirl pan (do not stir) for 15 minutes or until a deep amber color. Keep a close eye, and do not let it burn!
2. Remove from head and add cream slowly whilst stirring. Once combined add bourbon and salt. Put on warm burner for a minute. continue stirring. Set aside and cool.

Now for the drink part!
Ingredients:
3 TBS Caramel Sauce (or to taste)
2 Drop Of Pure Vanilla Extract
2 oz Bourbon
1/2 cup Whole Milk
1 1/2 cups Vanilla Ice Cream

Directions:
Drizzle cooled caramel sauce up the sides of a large chilled glass. Combine caramel sauce, vanilla extract, bourbon, whole milk and ice cream into a blender. Blend until smooth. Pour into glass and enjoy!

Pucker Up!

When I was a kid I didn’t want a normal job. My dream jobs were… to be Jerry Seinfeld (my mom told me I was funny, she lied) or to become a professional whistler.

Gin Mint Fizz. Pucker up for this one!
Sweet, sour, and ready to kick some ass.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup fresh lime juice
1/4 agave nectar
2 TBS packed mint leaves
2 oz gin
Ice
Club Soda

Directions:
1. Add fresh juice, agave nectar, and mint to a blender. Blend.
2. Add 2 oz of the mint/citrus mix, gin, and 2 ice cubes. Top with cold club soda. Stir and Enjoy.

 

Pinterest and Your Slimy Ways.

Dear Pinterest,
I will never live up to your pinteresty standards.

I would love my house to look like a ‘For the Home’ Pinterest board but I am no Martha Stewart. So I try to take on small projects. Pinterest and its frilly ways pulls you in with “fun”, “easy” diy projects that leave normal people crying on the floor covered in glitter.

Cake making.
That time I made a cake and all of my frosting rolled off. I thought it would be fun to do a chocolate marshmallow fluff icing… I was wrong. ALWAYS go buttercream. This is where my dream died to work for Duff Goldman.

I go on Pinterest splurges. Either I am on it everyday for weeks or I have not been on in months. I start pinning and get so many ideas for things I would LOVE to do in my home. And then reality sets in. I’m just not that crafty. For you ladies and gents that are, I commend you.

I will be sticking to Pinterest for drink ideas.

Thankfully we don’t all need to be crafty, good at cooking, or designing. Just be interesting and maybe try a few Pinterest projects at least once. Who knows you could be great!

Ingredients:
8 Fresh Blueberries
2 Ounces Rum
8 Fresh Mint Leaves
2 1/2 TBS Sugar
2 TBS lime Juice
2 TBS Club Soda
Ice Cubes
Bourbon

Directions:

  1.  Muddle blueberries, sugar, lime juice, and sugar.
  2. While muddling the mint and sugar, break the glass, get frustrated.
  3. Yell out “OH THE HUMANITY!”
  4. Give up, grab a new glass, pour 2 fingers of bourbon.

Voilà!

Why You Should Chop Your Hair Off In Your 20s.

Most bloggers will tell you to go do amazing things in your 20’s like, travel around the world, have lots of sex, and take every opportunity; and I totally agree. As much as I would LOVE to travel it is just not in the budget unless I am traveling to my backyard. My travel is through great drinks and food. Here is what I did instead.

A beautiful day in 2013 I walked into my hair appointment and decided I was going to shave my head. I just did it. No turning back. I immediately loved it.

Most people love the new hair style on me or at least say it fits my personality. I also know a lot of people that loved my long hair. I hated it, it was a nuisance, it rarely looked good, and honestly it was back in a bun about 95% of the time. I really don’t care what people think about my hair, I love it, and it makes me feel great about myself.

Short hair is awesome and I don’t ever want to go back. #shorthairdontcare

Here are a few reasons why…
1. Liberation- I Instantly felt liberated when I chopped my hair off. I felt like it was my first giant decision of my life that my parents did not have say over. It made me feel more like me.

2. Freedom- I felt by making a large change in my life I was set free from my old life and past experiences. I was reinvented. It was a new day to become a new, better, and more stylish person.

3. Confidence- What’s wrong with being confident? Absolutely nothing! I could now walk into a room and feel like I owned the place. I no longer felt shy or as anxious as I used to. This new hair couldn’t be attached to a dull girl.

This haircut helped me become a woman. About a week after the big chop I met my husband. =]

Take chances, make mistakes, and get your hands dirty; that’s what your 20’s are for. Cheers!

Liberation!

This is a strong and fruity one.

Ingredients:
1 oz light rum
2 oz dark rum
1/2 oz prickly pear simple syrup*
1/2 oz passion fruit puree.
1 oz of lemon juice
Ice

Directions: Add all ingredients to shaker, shake, and serve in tumbler.

How to make prickly pear simple syrup.
Add 1 cup of water, 1 cup of sugar to a pot. Remove skin from prickly pear fruit and roughly chop the fruit. Add fruit to the pot and simmer for 10-15 minutes. Strain out the fruit  and store prickly pear syrup in a air tight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

The Roomba

My husband graciously bought me an IRobot Roomba 650 for Mother’s day. I had been hinting at wanting one for awhile. Vacuuming everyday was becoming tedious and our coffee bamboo floors (pictured below) and hairy cat and dog were not mixing.

I charged my Roomba over night and was so excited to start him up in the morning! I pressed the gleaming “Clean” button. He woke up with a happy tune, turned on his vacuum, and started scooting around the house. Technology; amazing.

Then chaos ensued. The cat streaks out of the room (to be expected). The dog who I expected to ignore Roomba or want to play with him, starts screaming. Not barking straight screaming like someone is killing him. I try to calm him down, not working. I put him in his kennel since I am about to leave for work… still screaming. I had to turn Roomba off and put him back on his dock.

This is why we can’t have nice things.

Update:
After 1 day the dog no longer minded Roomba and welcomed him graciously. My dog especially enjoys it when Roomba finds his toys under the couch and pushes them out for him to play with. When can I get a Roomba that will play fetch with my dog?!?

I freakin’ love my Roomba. 5/5

The vacuum power is great. It picks up all debris off of the floors, especially pet hair. He rarely misses any parts of the house.

Noise level-Don’t forget it is a vacuum, so it does make noise. Roomba is still quieter than my small shark navigator which is also a great vacuum.

I could not believe how much hair this little guy picked up it was amazing. The presets also work great. He has no trouble going over rugs, finding his docking station, and he is great at getting unstuck. He even picked up all the cat litter around the cat box.

The only thing we had to do was ‘Roomba Proof’ our house. Picking up any cords he could get caught, on moving things off of the floor, and so on. Which actually just meant picking up our house. He is also some great entertainment. $300 well spent!

Dirty Rumba (Roomba)
In honor of my little Roomba man who is going to have a hard life as a robot.

Ingredients:
1/2 Lime cut into quarters
3/4 TBS of Brown Sugar
a few mint leaves
3 oz Light Rum
Ice Cubes
Soda Water

Directions:
Add lime quarters, brown sugar and mint leaves to shaker. Muddle in shaker. Add rum and shake. Strain into tumbler, add 2 ice cubes, top with chilled soda water. Drink and watch your Roomba clean your house for you.

A Nice Day for A Cheap Wedding

Why You Should Be a Budget Bride.

Let’s start with my ultra fab wedding. Hello June 23, 2014, a rainy day in Louisville, KY. A dashing new husband, a slutty dress, my mother-in-law playing photographer, and my father-in-law officiating. A hearty 4 person wedding. A little rain had us getting married under the court house awning. The COURT HOUSE?! Yes, the court house, somewhere I said I would NEVER get married.

The whole wedding cost about $300. An extreme budget wedding you could say. We did not go on a honeymoon, no engagement ring, and no reception with friends. Why would I settle for such a thing? Well, love. And some really great insurance. Shout out to the military.

Being a budget bride says many things to your friends and family. Maybe you decided to elope, maybe your family doesn’t have a lot of money, maybe you are saving your friends from having to spend a lot of money, or sit through an awful and long ceremony, maybe you’re spending your money in other places like a new house. Not spending a ton says a lot about you as a person and a couple. Something simple and beautiful is perfect. Your wedding day is about just one thing.. You! You and the person you are marrying and the start of your life together. It is not for putting on a show for your guests.

I know a lot of brides disagree, they say that you only get married once so it should be a big deal… even though 50% of marriages fail. I would much rather have a healthy marriage and a healthy savings account then spend money on a one day wedding show. But, that’s just me.

I could not have been happier doing the ceremony our way. We had a blast and laughed through the vows we had written for each other which were wicked awesome. “By THE BEARD OF ZEUS I know pronounce you husband and wife!”

Drink of the Day!

Gin and Tonic (simple and elegant) I DO NOT know how every bar messes this drink up. It is incredibly simple.

Ingredients:
3 ozs of Rangpur Gin or regular gin (Tanqueray)
2 Ice Cubes
Tonic
½ lime

Directions:
Pour gin in a tumbler, add two ice cubes, pour cold tonic over until almost full. Squeeze lime juice into glass and pop the lime right into the glass. Crisp and Refreshing. #g&t

What’s in a Name?

Welcome fellow life wanderers!

Brainstorming though many names I ended up here, with booze of course! The story behind ‘Make Me a Drink’ is a simple one. There are certain days; you know those days, when you get home from work tired, exhausted, and sick of people. Nights like that my husband and I look at each other and we know it’s a night for a drink. A beautiful, homemade, handcrafted, adult beverage. I usually say “so drinks tonight?” and he responds “hell yes”.  I start making dinner and I ask him to make me a drink, usually something with lemon or lime and gin. The pines are calling me and I must go.

Get ready for life stories, drink recipes, bad advice, and rambling. Cheers.

Pimp’s Cup (Pimm’s Cup, but better)
1/2 Lemon
2 oz Pimm’s Liqueur
2 oz Gin (We Tanqueray)
2 Ice Cubes
Ginger Ale (prefer Canada Dry)

Directions: Muddle 1/2 lemon into bottom of a lowball glass (traditional Pimm’s Cup is in a highball). Add Pimm’s and Gin to the glass. Drop in 2 ice cubes, fill the rest of the glass with ice cold ginger ale.

This is a fantastic any day drink, strong but refreshing. My personal favorite. If you have not had Pimm’s it is a  mulled spiced gin liqueur, caramel in color. There is nothing else like it, must try.
